SATs-style papers and MTC practice

When your child is ready, Steady Sums has three full practice papers in the same format as the KS2 maths SATs, with questions drawn from every world. Year 4 children can practise for the Multiplication Tables Check instead.

The papers are made fresh every time, so your child can practise again and again.

Year 4: MTC practice

Practice for the Multiplication Tables Check in June. It is the only timed part of Steady Sums, and it is clearly labelled.

25 questions, 6 seconds each

Like the real check: 3 warm-ups, then 25 times table questions with a calm time bar and a short pause between questions.

The real access options

Questions can be read aloud, and a Next button can replace the pause, just like the real check’s access arrangements.

A private score

Your child sees their score and the facts to practise next, which open straight into untimed practice. There is no pass mark in the real check.

Years 5 and 6: practice papers

Year 6 sees “Mock Papers” and a gentle SATs countdown. Year 5 sees the same papers as “Practice Papers”.

Paper 1: Arithmetic

36 questions, 40 marks. 30 minutes, or 37½ minutes with extra time. Written methods earn method marks.

Paper 2: Reasoning

25 questions, 35 marks. 40 minutes, or 50 minutes with extra time. Word problems, shapes, measures and charts.

Paper 3: Reasoning

25 more questions, 35 marks, with the same timings as Paper 2.

Test arrangements built in

Extra time, a reader (every question read aloud) and rest breaks that stop the clock can all be switched on to match your child’s school arrangements.

Untimed if you prefer

Grown-ups can turn the timer off, and the time bar can be hidden so it doesn’t distract.

Results for grown-ups

Scores over time, and the topics where marks are most often lost, are in the PIN-protected Grown-ups area.
