Measure Mountains
Measure Mountains covers measurement: telling the time on a clock face, money and change, measuring with a ruler, perimeter and area, then converting units, volume and measurement problems in Years 5 and 6.
Questions use real pictures: clock faces (including Roman numeral clocks), rulers, squared paper and measuring scales.

Years 3 and 4: getting started
The Year 3 and 4 skills. Younger children start here, and older children can use them for a recap.
Telling the time
The short hand shows the hour. The long hand shows the minutes. Each number on the clock is 5 minutes.
- o'clock and half past
- quarter past and quarter to
- to 5 minutes
- to the nearest minute
- Roman numeral clocks
Time facts and how long
60 seconds in a minute. 60 minutes in an hour. 24 hours in a day. 7 days in a week.
- facts to know
- change the units
- how long?
Money: pounds, pence and change
100p = £1. To find change, count up from the price to the money you paid.
- add up coins
- pounds and pence
- change
- p ↔ £
Measuring with a ruler
Line up the end with 0. Read where the other end is. 1cm = 10mm.
- in centimetres
- in millimetres
- not starting at 0
Perimeter of simple shapes
Perimeter is the distance all the way round the outside. Add up every side.
- rectangles
- squares
- shapes on squared paper
Area by counting squares
Area is the space inside a shape. Count the squares.
- rectangles
- other shapes
Years 5 and 6: next steps
The Year 5 and 6 skills, building up to the KS2 SATs.
Length: mm, cm, m, km
10mm = 1cm. 100cm = 1m. 1,000m = 1km.
- big unit → small unit
- small unit → big unit
Mass and capacity: g, kg, ml, litres
1,000g = 1kg. 1,000ml = 1 litre.
- kg → g, litres → ml
- g → kg, ml → litres
Reading scales
Work out what each small step is worth. Then count from the nearest number.
- steps of 1, 2, 5 or 10
- bigger steps
12-hour and 24-hour time
After 12 noon, add 12 to the hours. 3:45 pm is 15:45. Midnight is 00:00.
- 12-hour → 24-hour
- what time does it finish?
- how long between two times
Perimeter
Perimeter is the distance all the way round. Add up every side.
- rectangles
- L-shapes
- find a missing side
Area
Area is the space inside. Rectangle: length × width. Triangle: half of base × height.
- rectangles
- L-shapes
- triangles
- parallelograms
Volume
Volume is the space a 3D shape takes up. Cuboid: length × width × height.
- cuboids
- cubes
- find a missing length
Miles, inches and pounds
Old units still used today. You will always be told how they compare.
- miles and km
- inches and cm
- kg and pounds
Measurement problems
Word problems with lengths, weights and amounts. Change to the same unit first!
- pouring
- cutting
- adding weights
- fencing cost
How Measure Mountains works
- A short, no-pressure quick check finds the right starting point. It isn’t a test.
- Every question can be read aloud, and hints show a picture first.
- Each level has its own boss battle, unlocked once your child has had plenty of practice.
- Practice is untimed.
